SHAME ON THE EITI GROUP AND ITS OSLO MEETING

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative has ruined its own credibility by approving the membership of Ethiopia which is under one of the most repressive regimes in Africa. Shame on you EITI!

Numerous human rights organizations, including SOCEPP, had written to EITI informing the body that the regime in Addis Abeba is a human rights predator with thousands of dissidents, journalists, Moslem elders, Amharas, and political prisoners from all walks of life in its horrible dungeons. The regime has committed massacres, engaged in ethnic cleansing, sold land the size of Belgium to foreigners, callously damaged the environment, involved in masive corruption,  removed peasants from their land by force, it has a repressive labor and press law, a decree against NGOs, an anti-terror Law that has been extensively used to jail dissidents of all hues. All this and more had been communicated to the EITI but to no avail. The EITI has chosen to ridicule and shame itself, to belittle its own declared principles by embracing a notorious anti-people regime that stinks to the skies.

SOCEPP calls on Ethiopians and all peace loving human rights organizations to vigorously condemn the EITI from acting against the people of Ethiopia and even against its own declared principles.

Shame on the EITI!
