APPEAL TO THE SWISS AUTHORITIES: PLEASE RESPECT THE ASYLUM RIGHTS OF HAILEMEDHIN ABERA
“Desperate times call for desperate action”
SOCEPP sends this appeal to the Federal SWISS government, the Ministry of Justice and the Federal prosecutor’s office to appeal for Hailemedhin Abera Tegegn who was forced, by far of grave persecution, to divert the plane he co-piloted to Geneva. No one was harmed and he was not even armed. His illegal entry into Switzerland should be understood within the context of his desperate search for asylum in Switzerland.
The regime in Addis Abeba is condemned a violator of human rights. Many dissidents have been thrown into notorious prison camps like Zwai, imprisoned and subjected to inhuman torture in secret/ghost prisons (the worst one being Tigrai and in Addis Abeba. Worst of all, the regime in place lets its murder squads kill those who oppose it or/and has disappeared dozens whom it considers “dangerous”. The atmosphere of fear and despair is palpable and local and international human rights organizations have condemned the regime as a gross violator of human rights. As one of the worst predator of the free press, as a regime based on cruel ethnic discrimination. Ethnic cleansing, deportation from one’s fertile land leased off to foreign firms, stifling poverty, insecurity, absence of due process and the rule of law characterize the existing regime in Addis Abeba. Hailemedhin Abera, who said he felt persecution, had practically no other choice so to speak. He does not deserve prison but asylum rights.
